Four Paintings

Overlapping charcoal marks at a distance acquire a third dimension, become visual emblems of human entanglement, commitment, and interdependence.

In this series Alex Calinescu’s work has reached a new level of purity. These reproductions have a calligraphic beauty and delicate fragility, yet still only hint at the intensity of the large-scale canvases.

There is nothing arbitrary here. The work is pared down to its purest elements. And in this abstraction lies its profundity.
