Soul Of A Nation - Tate Modern

Soul Of A Nation - Tate Modern

Thoroughly enjoying Late Night Tate and the perfect opportunity for a second viewing of Soul Of A Nation - Art In The Age Of Black Power. So much to see, and a third visit is definitely necessary.

I was especially drawn to the work of Betye Saar

"I'm intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology. It's a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge." Betye Saar

and the wonderful photographs by Roy DeCarava

"You should be able to look at me and see my work. You should be able to look at my work and see me." Roy DeCarava.

Roy DeCarava, 1919-2009 "Shade chord and window" 1961
Melvin Edwards "Curtain (for William and Peter)" 1969, barbed wire and chain.
Noah Purifoy "Untitled" 1966 Mixed media
David Hammons (b 1943) Flight Fantasy Early 1980's Records, reeds, string and hair
Betye Saar "Spirit Catcher" 1977 Rattan, wood, leather, acrylic paint, mirror, bones, feathers, rope and shells.
Loving Late Night Tate!
