Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2011

Two works by Alex Calinescu have been selected from 11,000 submissions for inclusion in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition 2011.

These canvases are from her new body of work, and it is entirely fitting that the first time they will be seen, outside of the studio, will be at the Royal Academy, where Calinescu was a Postgraduate student from 1989 to 1992.

The first piece, 2011 - 6674 – 2, has been hung in Gallery III, alongside work predominantly by Royal Academicians. The canvas is 166cm x 186cm, white soft pastel and pigment against a dark blue acrylic ground, and is the second canvas in a series of four made in 2011.

The second piece, 2010 - 8290 – 8, can be seen from Gallery III, framed as you look through the Central Hall, the Lecture Room, and into Gallery IX, where it has been hung centrally on the wall. 2010 - 8290 - 8 is acrylic on canvas, 208cm x 228cm, and is the eighth in the series of paintings from 2010.

In addition to the new canvases, Alex Calinescu has been working on a series of monoprints, her first since 1992, and these will shortly be available directly from her studio. A selection can now be viewed in the Print section of her website www.alexcalinescu.com.
